Lämpöresistanssit, known in English as thermal resistance, is a property of a material or a system that describes its opposition to heat flow. It quantifies how effectively a substance resists the transfer of thermal energy through conduction, convection, or radiation. A high thermal resistance indicates that a material is a poor conductor of heat, meaning it will slow down the rate at which heat passes through it. Conversely, a low thermal resistance suggests that heat can easily flow through the material.

Thermal resistance is a crucial concept in many fields, including building insulation, electronics cooling, and thermal management systems. In buildings, materials with high thermal resistance, such as fiberglass or foam insulation, are used to minimize heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, thereby improving energy efficiency. In electronics, components that generate significant heat need to be managed to prevent overheating. Heat sinks, often made of materials with low thermal resistance like aluminum or copper, are used to dissipate this heat away from sensitive electronic parts.

The unit of thermal resistance in the International System of Units (SI) is Kelvin per watt (K/W) or degrees Celsius per watt (°C/W), as the temperature difference is often measured in either Kelvin or Celsius, and the heat flow is measured in watts. Thermal resistance can be calculated for different modes of heat transfer. For conduction, it depends on the material's thermal conductivity, its thickness, and its cross-sectional area. For convection, it depends on the convection heat transfer coefficient and the surface area. Understanding and managing thermal resistance is essential for designing efficient and reliable systems where temperature control is a critical factor.
