Lämpökeräytymisellä, often translated as thermal accumulation or heat storage, refers to the process and technology of capturing and storing thermal energy for later use. This concept is fundamental to improving energy efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources into the power grid. The primary goal is to balance the fluctuations in energy supply and demand, particularly when dealing with intermittent sources like solar and wind power.

There are several methods for thermal accumulation. Sensible heat storage involves raising or lowering the temperature of a storage medium without changing its phase. Common materials include water, rocks, concrete, and molten salts. Latent heat storage utilizes the phase change of a material, such as melting or freezing, to store or release large amounts of energy at a nearly constant temperature. Phase change materials (PCMs) are key to this method. Thermochemical heat storage involves reversible chemical reactions that absorb or release heat. This method offers high energy density and long-term storage capabilities.
