Lávvur

Lávvur is a traditional Sami tent dwelling used by the indigenous Sami people of northern Europe. It is a portable structure, historically used by nomadic reindeer herders. The word "lávvur" itself is of Sami origin.

The design of a lavvu is conical, typically supported by a tripod or tetrapod of wooden poles. These poles are often made from birch or pine. The covering of the lavvu is traditionally made from reindeer hides or, in more modern times, canvas or synthetic materials. The hides were sewn together and then stretched over the pole framework.

A key feature of the lavvu is its adaptability to harsh weather conditions. The conical shape allows wind to pass over it smoothly, reducing the risk of damage. The central opening at the top, known as a vent or chimney, allows for smoke from a fire to escape while also providing ventilation. A fire pit is usually located in the center of the lavvu, providing heat and light.

The interior of a lavvu is relatively simple, often furnished with sleeping furs and cooking utensils. The portability of the lavvu was essential for the Sami lifestyle, allowing them to move with their reindeer herds across the Arctic landscape. While modern housing is now common, the lavvu remains a significant cultural symbol and is still used for traditional events, cultural tourism, and by some who continue to follow traditional lifestyles.
