Lyhytkytkentöjä, often translated as short circuits, are unintended low-resistance pathways that develop within an electrical circuit. This deviation from the normal operational path allows electric current to bypass the intended load, such as a light bulb or motor, and flow directly back to the power source. This bypass creates a significantly higher current flow than the circuit is designed to handle.

The primary cause of short circuits is usually insulation failure. This can occur due to damaged wiring, faulty components, or improper installation. For example, frayed wires touching each other or a live wire making contact with a grounded metal casing can initiate a short circuit. Overheating, mechanical stress, and aging of materials are also contributing factors.

The consequences of a short circuit can be severe. The excessive current generates a substantial amount of heat, which can melt insulation, damage components, and potentially ignite nearby flammable materials, leading to fires. In some cases, the rapid surge of current can cause explosions or electrical arcs.

To protect against the dangers of short circuits, electrical systems are equipped with protective devices. Fuses and circuit breakers are designed to detect the abnormally high current and interrupt the flow of electricity, thereby preventing damage and mitigating fire hazards. Proper electrical design, regular maintenance, and careful handling of electrical equipment are crucial in preventing short circuits.
