Luutihedus

Luutihedus refers to the mass of bone tissue within a given volume of bone. It is a crucial indicator of bone health and is commonly measured using a technique called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Higher bone density generally signifies stronger bones, while lower bone density indicates that bones are weaker and more susceptible to fractures.

Factors influencing luutihedus are multifaceted, encompassing genetics, age, diet, physical activity, and hormonal status. Peak bone mass is typically achieved in early adulthood, after which it gradually declines with age. Women, particularly after menopause, experience a more rapid decrease in bone density due to hormonal changes.

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by significantly low luutihedus, making bones fragile and increasing the risk of fractures, especially in the hip, spine, and wrist. Conversely, conditions like osteopetrosis involve abnormally high luutihedus, which can lead to increased bone fragility and other health issues.

Maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, engaging in regular weight-bearing exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are key strategies for promoting and preserving good luutihedus throughout life. Regular bone density screening is recommended for individuals at higher risk of osteoporosis.
