Lustletus

Lustletus is a genus of small bioluminescent marine crustaceans described from tropical reef environments. The only formally described species in the genus is Lustletus lucens. The genus and species were established in 1998 by researchers Elena Marin and Suresh Ito, based on specimens collected from coral reef habitats in the western Indian Ocean.

Morphology and physiology

Individuals measure roughly 1.5 to 3 centimeters in length. They have a slender, laterally compressed body with a translucent carapace and a flexible abdomen. Photophores are arranged along the carapace margins and abdomen, producing a pale blue-green glow. The eyes are relatively large, aiding nocturnal activity, and the paired pereiopods show fine lamellae suited to filtering plankton and detritus.

Habitat and distribution

Lustletus lucens is associated with shallow to mid-depth reef zones, typically found from about 5 to 40 meters. It favors cryptic microhabitats such as crevices, rubble, and macroalgae where it can remain hidden during daylight and emerge at night to feed. The species has been reported in tropical and subtropical waters of multiple oceans, with a distribution suggesting wide but patchy colonies tied to reef health.

Biology and ecology

The genus is nocturnal and relies on bioluminescence for intraspecific communication and predator deterrence. It feeds on microzooplankton and detrital particles, often joining loose aggregations at dusk before dispersing to feeding sites. The life cycle includes sexual reproduction, with females carrying eggs on pleopods until hatching into free-swimming nauplius or larval stages.

Conservation and taxonomy

There is limited field data on population size and trends, and no formal IUCN assessment. Habitat degradation and reef disruption are potential threats. The name Lustletus derives from Latin roots related to illumination, reflecting the organism’s luminescent characteristics.
