Lungnasjúkdómum refers to diseases affecting the lungs. These conditions can impair the lungs' ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, leading to various respiratory problems. They can be categorized into several types, including obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, infections, and cancers.

Obstructive lung diseases are characterized by airflow limitation. Examples include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which encompasses chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and asthma. In these conditions, the airways become narrowed or blocked, making it difficult to exhale.

Restrictive lung diseases involve a decrease in lung volume. This can be due to problems within the lung tissue itself, such as interstitial lung diseases like pulmonary fibrosis, or from external factors affecting the chest wall or respiratory muscles.

Infectious lung diseases are caused by pathogens like bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pneumonia, tuberculosis, and influenza are common examples. These infections can cause inflammation and fluid buildup in the air sacs.

Lung cancers are characterized by abnormal cell growth in the lungs. They are often linked to smoking but can also arise from other factors.
