Lukius

Lukius is a genus of ray-finned fish belonging to the family Ophidiidae, commonly known as cusk-eels. These marine fish are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, inhabiting a variety of environments from shallow coastal areas to the deep sea.

Species within the genus Lukius are characterized by their elongated, eel-like bodies, which are typically compressed laterally. They possess continuous dorsal and anal fins that meet at the caudal fin, giving them a sinuous appearance. Their coloration can vary, often featuring shades of brown, gray, or black, sometimes with patterns or spots. Lukius species generally have small eyes and a mouth positioned ventrally.

The diet of Lukius fishes is not extensively documented but is believed to consist mainly of small invertebrates and crustaceans found on the seabed. They are typically benthic, spending most of their time near the ocean floor. Information regarding their reproductive strategies is also limited, though like other ophidiiforms, they are thought to lay eggs.

Few species are formally described within the genus Lukius. One notable example is Lukius marisrubri, which has been recorded in the Red Sea. Due to their relatively obscure nature and deep-sea or less accessible habitats, much remains to be discovered about the life history and ecological significance of Lukius.
