Lubricative is an adjective used to describe substances or conditions that reduce friction between surfaces in relative motion. When used as a noun, it often refers to a lubricant or lubricating medium. The term encompasses a broad range of materials and formulations designed to form a lubricating film, decrease wear, and manage heat in mechanical systems, as well as natural fluids in biological contexts that perform similar functions.

Common lubricatives include mineral-based and synthetic oils, esters and polyalkylene glycols, and solid lubricants such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide. Many lubricants are formulated with additives to improve viscosity stability, corrosion resistance, anti-wear properties, and friction reduction. There are water-based or emulsified lubricants, silicone-based oils, and biodegradable or bio-based lubricants derived from vegetable oils for environmental considerations. In biological contexts, lubricative substances include synovial fluid in joints and mucus, which reduce friction between tissues.

Mechanisms of lubrication involve hydrodynamic or elastohydrodynamic film formation that separates surfaces at speed, and boundary lubrication that relies on protective surface films and additives at low speeds or high pressures. Key properties include lubricity, viscosity, viscosity index, pour point, thermal stability, and compatibility with materials. Performance is influenced by temperature, load, speed, and the presence of contaminants or reactive chemicals.

Applications span industry and biology. In industry, lubricatives are used in engines, turbines, gears, bearings, hydraulics, and cutting tools. In medicine and dentistry, lubricants reduce friction in joints, catheters, and other devices. The term derives from Latin lubricare, meaning to make slippery, reflecting its fundamental function of enabling smooth, low-friction contact.
