Lower temperature refers to a state of matter or environment in which the average kinetic energy of its particles is reduced relative to a reference point. In technical writings the term lowertemperature is sometimes used as a compound noun to denote such reduced-thermal-energy states. In practical terms, temperatures are measured on several scales; Kelvin is the absolute scale used in science for very low temperatures, with 0 K being absolute zero. Celsius and Fahrenheit are common for everyday use, where 0 °C is the freezing point of water and -273.15 °C corresponds roughly to 0 K. Lower temperatures are achieved by removing heat from a system through various cooling methods.

Techniques include mechanical refrigeration using vapor-compression cycles, absorption refrigeration, heat exchangers, and cryogenic methods such as liquid nitrogen cooling to 77 K, liquid helium to 4.2 K, and dilution refrigerators for millikelvin ranges. Adiabatic demagnetization is used to reach ultra-low temperatures in research. Insulation and vacuum systems minimize heat influx. Practical lower temperature limits are set by equipment, energy cost, and material properties.

As temperature decreases, many materials contract; water is anomalous by expanding below 4 °C. Gases become denser and their viscosity increases; diffusion slows; chemical reaction rates typically decrease. At cryogenic temperatures, quantum effects emerge, enabling phenomena such as superconductivity and Bose-Einstein condensation. Specific heat can vary widely and may be very low in some materials, affecting thermal management.

Applications include food preservation, medical storage, cryogenics in physics experiments, superconducting magnets for MRI and particle accelerators, and quantum computing research. Understanding low-temperature behavior is essential in materials science, thermodynamics, and condensed matter physics.

Safety and practicality concerns include the hazards of cryogenic liquids, oxygen displacement, and cold burns. Proper insulation, venting, signage, and controlled handling are required to operate low-temperature systems.
