LowMidHigh

LowMidHigh (also described as Low-Mid-High) refers to a common three-band framework in audio production that designates three broad ranges of audio frequency content: low, mid, and high. It is used to describe how devices, processes, and decisions affect different parts of the spectrum in a mix or master.

In practice, LowMidHigh describes equalizers, filter banks, and dynamics processors that operate on these bands. The exact cutoffs vary by source, but typical boundaries are roughly 20 Hz to 250 Hz for low, 250 Hz to 2 kHz for mid, and 2 kHz to 20 kHz for high. Some systems further split the mid band into low-mid and high-mid. This framework helps engineers arrange tonal balance by separating bass weight, midrange body and presence, and treble brightness.

The concept supports common mixing and mastering workflows. Boosting lows adds warmth or impact, while cutting lows can reduce rumble or muddiness. Boosting highs can increase clarity and air, whereas adjusting the mids affects vocal intelligibility, instrument bite, and overall presence. Three-band EQs offer quick, intuitive control, and dynamic EQ or multiband compression can target each band more precisely as needed.

While widely used, the three-band approach is a simplification. Some productions require more bands or different boundaries, and many processors allow smooth transitions between bands. Nevertheless, LowMidHigh remains a foundational concept for shaping tonal balance in contemporary audio work.
