Lossykoodekeilla

Lossykoodekeilla, or lossy codecs, are a type of data compression algorithm used to reduce the size of files by permanently discarding some of the data. This is in contrast to lossless codecs, which achieve compression by removing redundancy without losing any information, allowing for perfect reconstruction of the original data.

The principle behind lossy compression is that certain data can be removed without significantly affecting the perceived quality of the content. For audio, this often involves eliminating frequencies that are outside the range of human hearing or sounds that are masked by louder sounds. For images, it might involve discarding subtle color variations or details that are not easily discernible to the human eye.

Common examples of lossy codecs include JPEG for images, MP3 and AAC for audio, and MP4 (which often uses codecs like H.264 or H.265) for video. These codecs are widely used because they can achieve much higher compression ratios than lossless methods, making it practical to store and transmit large amounts of digital media.

The trade-off for smaller file sizes with lossy codecs is a reduction in data fidelity. While the perceived quality can be very high at moderate compression levels, aggressive compression can lead to noticeable artifacts, such as blockiness in images or a muffled sound in audio. The degree of loss is typically controllable, allowing users to balance file size against quality.
