Lospitalità

Lospitalità, in Italian l'ospitalità, is the practice and virtue of receiving guests and strangers with kindness, shelter, and sustenance. It encompasses the relationship between host and guest and can refer to social norms, acts of generosity, and institutions that facilitate welcoming.

The term derives from Latin hospit-, hospes, meaning host or guest; in Italian, l'ospitalità expresses a broad sense of welcome extending beyond merely providing shelter to include consideration, protection, and reciprocity.

Historically, hospitality has been central in many cultures. In ancient times, hosts had duties to protect guests; in medieval Europe, monasteries provided hospitality to travelers; in the Mediterranean and Near East, hospitality is a defining social virtue, often linked to honor and kinship.

In modern usage, l'ospitalità also denotes the hospitality industry—hotels, restaurants, travel services—where professional standards govern service quality, safety, and guest experience.
