Lormish

Lormish is a fictional language created for the fantasy setting of the Lormi, an ancient seafaring people in the archipelago of Lora. It is the native tongue of the Lormi and appears in novels, games, and worldbuilding material. It is described as agglutinative, with affixes marking number, case, tense, aspect, mood, voice, and evidentiality. The typical basic clause order is subject–object–verb, though case marking allows flexible word order. The pronoun system includes inclusive and exclusive forms; verbs encode aspect and evidential stance rather than a simple tense.

Phonology features five vowel phonemes and a consonant inventory including stops, nasals, fricatives, and approximants; stress is often on the penultimate syllable. The phonology favors open syllables and avoids heavy consonant clusters early in words.

Writing is traditionally done with the Lorm script, a syllabary-derived system; in modern editions, it is commonly rendered in a Latin-based transcription for ease of use in digital formats.

Cultural role and usage are central to the language’s depiction in the lore. Lormish carries Lormi identity and ceremonial registers, with distinctive poetic forms and nautical terminology that reflect seafaring traditions. Several dialects or regional varieties are described, associated with different islands or ports, contributing to a sense of linguistic diversity within the worldbuilding.
