Loodust

Loodust is a term used in Dutch-language contexts to denote dust composed of lead particles. Lead dust forms when lead-containing materials are disturbed or degrade, such as old paints, lead-acid batteries, smelting operations, or contaminated soil. The particles are fine and can be inhaled or ingested, posing a risk especially to children.

Health effects include neurodevelopmental delays in children, cognitive deficits, behavioral problems, and cardiovascular or kidney issues in adults with chronic exposure. In homes with lead-based paint, interventions include encapsulation, removal by trained professionals, and thorough cleaning using wet methods and HEPA vacuums. Soil remediation, landscaping, or removing contaminated soil may be advised for outdoor sites.
