Education and regulation typically require a university degree in logopedi or speech-language pathology and professional licensure or registration in the country where they practice. Ongoing professional development and adherence to ethical guidelines and evidence-based practice are standard parts of the profession.

Settings include schools, clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practice. Logopedter often work as part of multidisciplinary teams with physicians, teachers, psychologists, and occupational therapists, and they frequently collaborate with families and caregivers to implement strategies at home and in daily life.

Assessment relies on standardized tests, language sampling, and clinical observation. Treatment is individualized, with clear goals and regular progress monitoring. Interventions may address speech sound therapy, language stimulation, stuttering modification or fluency shaping, voice therapy, and feeding or swallowing therapy. They may also implement augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods when needed and may use telepractice in some settings.

Terminology and professional structure vary by country; in many places the field is known as speech-language pathology, and logoped is a regional term for the practitioner.
