The term, common in Danish and Norwegian practice, describes projects that optimize the movement of goods, information, and capital across networks of suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, carriers, and customers. Focus areas include transportation planning, warehouse design and automation, inventory management, and the integration of information technology such as warehouse management systems (WMS) and transport management systems (TMS).

Projects follow a structured lifecycle, typically including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing. Depending on size and risk, teams may use traditional or iterative approaches. A project charter defines objectives, scope, budget, schedule, and success criteria; governance is provided by a sponsor or PMO, with involvement from logistics, IT, suppliers, and customers.

Common objectives are to reduce total logistics cost, improve service levels and reliability, shorten lead times, increase inventory turnover, and lower environmental impact. Key performance indicators include cost per order, on-time delivery, fill rate, cycle time, and emissions. Benefits usually arise from improved network design, standardized processes, and better data-driven decision making.

Methods used include process mapping and value-stream analysis, network design and simulation, capacity planning, inventory optimization, and IT-enabled improvements (WMS, TMS, ERP integration). Risk management addresses demand volatility, capacity constraints, regulatory compliance, data quality, cybersecurity, and change management. Projects are assessed for ROI and strategic alignment.

Common project types include network optimization, warehouse redesign and automation, cross-docking, transportation optimization, and end-to-end visibility systems.
