Lodine

Lodine is a brand name for etodolac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is available in immediate-release and extended-release oral formulations, and generic etodolac is marketed under other names as well.

Etodolac works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes involved in prostaglandin synthesis, thereby reducing inflammation, pain, and fever. It has a relatively modest preference for COX-2 over COX-1, which may be associated with a somewhat lower risk of gastrointestinal irritation compared with many other nonselective NSAIDs, though NSAID-related GI, renal, and cardiovascular risks persist.

Administration is oral, and dosing is individualized based on disease severity, response, and tolerability. The extended-release form is typically taken once daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset, while immediate-release formulations may be given two to four times daily as directed by a healthcare provider.

Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, nausea, abdominal pain, and, less frequently, dizziness or headaches. Serious risks include gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, kidney or liver problems, increased blood pressure, and allergic reactions. Lodine should not be used in individuals with active peptic ulcers or significant kidney or liver disease, in those with a known NSAID allergy, or during the third trimester of pregnancy. It may interact with anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, diuretics, and certain antihypertensive medications.
