Lockmönster

Lockmönster, meaning "lock pattern" in Swedish, refers to a specific technique used in Swedish weaving. It is a form of binding off or finishing off woven edges. The lockmönster is characterized by its ability to create a neat and secure edge that prevents the warp threads from unraveling. This is achieved by intertwining the weft threads with the warp threads at the very end of the weaving process.

The execution of lockmönster typically involves taking a few weft threads and looping them back around the outermost warp threads, effectively locking them in place. This process is often repeated for a small section at the beginning and end of the weaving, or sometimes around the entire perimeter if the design calls for it. The resulting edge is not only functional but can also contribute to the overall aesthetic of the woven piece, adding a subtle textural element.

This technique is particularly common in traditional Swedish textiles such as huckaback (rostväv) and other types of plain weave. Its primary purpose is to provide durability and a finished appearance to items like towels, placemats, and decorative cloths.
