Lmetioniinista, also known as methionine, is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid that plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It is classified as "essential" because the human body cannot synthesize it on its own; therefore, it must be obtained through dietary sources. Methionine is one of the 20 standard amino acids that make up proteins and is encoded by the genetic code.

The chemical structure of methionine consists of a central carbon atom (the alpha carbon) bonded to an amino group (NH₂), a carboxyl group (COOH), a hydrogen atom, and a side chain containing sulfur (CH₃SCH₂CH₂–).
