Livscykelbedömningen, often abbreviated as LCA, is a systematic methodology used to assess the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product's life, from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance, and disposal or recycling. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of a product's environmental footprint, rather than focusing solely on a single stage of its life.

The process typically involves several key phases: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation. The goal and scope definition phase establishes the purpose of the study and the boundaries of the system being analyzed. The inventory analysis involves collecting data on all inputs and outputs of the system, such as energy consumption, raw material usage, and emissions. The impact assessment phase translates these inventory data into environmental impacts, such as global warming potential, acidification, and eutrophication. Finally, the interpretation phase involves drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on the results of the assessment.

LCA is a valuable tool for decision-making in various fields, including product development, policy-making, and environmental management. It helps identify environmental hotspots in a product's life cycle, allowing for targeted improvements.
