Liuottinpohjaiset

Liuottinpohjaiset, meaning "solvent-based" in Finnish, refer to coatings, inks, and adhesives that rely on organic solvents as the primary medium to dissolve the binder and control viscosity during application. In these systems a polymeric binder—such as alkyd, polyurethane, acrylic, or epoxy resins—is dissolved or dispersed in a mixture of volatile solvents, with pigments or additives included for color and performance. After application by brushing, spraying, or rolling, the solvents evaporate, leaving a continuous film that cures through drying and, in some cases, chemical crosslinking. They are widely used in industrial and consumer products, including metal and wood coatings, automotive refinishes, protective coatings, printing inks, and various adhesives.

Advantages of Liuottinpohjaiset coatings include high gloss, strong adhesion to challenging substrates, rapid drying and cure, and broad formulation flexibility to meet specific performance requirements. They typically provide durable finishes with good solvent release and weather resistance. However, they also present notable drawbacks: higher emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), flammability and health risks associated with solvent vapors, and regulatory and disposal costs linked to environmental controls. Regulatory contexts, such as EU VOC limits and national implementations, increasingly favor low-VOC or water-based alternatives, prompting industry shifts in many regions, including Finland.

Safety and handling considerations are essential, given flammable solvents and potential fumes. Proper ventilation, grounding and bonding in mixing areas, and compliant storage and waste management are standard requirements. Environmental considerations include solvent recovery and responsible disposal of used solvents and contaminated materials.
