Litiumaikaiset, also known as lithium batteries or lithium-ion batteries, are rechargeable power sources widely used in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage systems. These batteries utilize lithium ions as their primary charge carriers, distinguishing them from other battery types like lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride.

The basic structure of a lithium-ion battery consists of an anode (typically made of graphite), a cathode (often composed of lithium metal oxides such as lithium cobalt oxide or lithium iron phosphate), and an electrolyte that facilitates ion movement between the electrodes. During discharge, lithium ions migrate from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte, releasing energy. When charging, the process reverses, restoring the ions to the anode.

Lithium-ion batteries are favored for their high energy density, lightweight nature, and long cycle life compared to traditional batteries. They are commonly found in devices like smartphones, laptops, and electric toothbrushes, as well as in larger applications such as electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy storage solutions. However, they require careful handling due to safety concerns, including potential risks of overheating, fire, or explosion if damaged or improperly charged.

The development of lithium-ion technology began in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with significant contributions from researchers like John Goodenough, Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino, who were later awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 for their work. Advances in materials science continue to improve battery efficiency, safety, and lifespan, driving further adoption in emerging technologies.
