Lirella

Lirella is a genus of medium-sized songbirds belonging to the family Artamidae. The genus currently contains four species, all of which are native to Australia. Lirella birds are generally found in woodlands and forests, though some species inhabit more open country. They are characterized by their stout, pointed bills, which are adapted for feeding on insects and other invertebrates.

The four species in the genus Lirella are the Black-capped Lorrybird (Lirella atricapilla), the White-eared Lorrybird (Lirella leucotis), the Grey-backed Lorrybird (Lirella hypoleuca), and the Rufous-naped Lorrybird (Lirella rufinucha). All species share a similar body plan, with a relatively short tail and rounded wings. Their plumage varies between species, but generally includes shades of grey, brown, and white, with some species exhibiting distinctive markings on their heads or backs.

Lirella birds are typically solitary or found in pairs, though they may form small flocks outside of the breeding season. Their diet consists primarily of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, which they glean from foliage and bark. They may also supplement their diet with seeds and nectar. The breeding biology of Lirella birds is not well-studied, but they are thought to be monogamous and territorial. Nests are typically cup-shaped and constructed from twigs, grass, and other plant materials, and are usually placed in trees or shrubs.

The conservation status of the Lirella species varies. The Black-capped Lorrybird is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, while the White-eared Lorrybird and Grey-backed Lorrybird are also considered Least Concern. The Rufous-naped Lorrybird is currently unassessed. Habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to Lirella populations, particularly in areas with intensive agriculture or development.
