Linsmodeller

Linsmodeller is a term used in some Scandinavian statistical literature to describe a class of models that express a linear relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. They are commonly referred to in English as linear models and form the core of the general linear model framework, which includes simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, and related formulations.

A typical linsmodel is written as Y = Xβ + ε, where Y is the outcome vector, X is the matrix of predictor variables, β is the vector of coefficients to be estimated, and ε is the error term. The key assumptions usually include linearity in the parameters, independence of observations, homoscedasticity (constant variance of errors), and, for inference about β, normally distributed errors. Estimation is usually done by ordinary least squares (OLS), which yields unbiased and efficient estimates under the standard assumptions. Inference uses standard errors, t-tests, and F-tests.

Variants of linsmodeller include generalized linear models for non-normal response distributions, linear mixed models that incorporate random effects for grouped or hierarchical data, and regularized versions such as ridge or lasso regression to address multicollinearity and overfitting. Time-series analysis often applies linear modeling to capture deterministic relationships, occasionally within a broader ARIMA or state-space framework.

Applications of linsmodeller span many fields, including economics, psychology, biology, engineering, and environmental science. Diagnostic tools like R-squared, residual plots, variance inflation factors, and influence measures help assess fit and detect potential issues such as multicollinearity or influential observations.
