Limaskestal
Limaskestal is an anatomical term referring to the mucous membranes that line many cavities and passages of the body which communicate with the exterior. These membranes form a moist, protective layer on surfaces such as the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts, as well as the ocular surface. The basic structure includes an epithelial layer supported by a connective tissue layer called the lamina propria, and in some regions a thin muscular layer called the muscularis mucosae. The epithelium often contains mucus-secreting goblet cells that contribute to lubrication and protection.
The specific type of epithelium varies by site. In the mouth, esophagus, and vagina, the mucosal surface
