Likören

Likören is a category of flavored, sweetened alcoholic beverages. In many European and world markets it is produced by infusing a base spirit with fruits, herbs, nuts, spices, or other flavorings and then sweetening the result with sugar or syrup. The ABV typically ranges from about 15% to 40%.

Production generally involves maceration or percolation of flavorings in a neutral alcohol, followed by filtration and the addition of sugar syrup. Some liqueurs are aged to integrate flavors, and some are fortified with additional alcohol or wine base.

Common varieties include fruit liqueurs such as cherry or strawberry, herbal and bitter liqueurs, nut-based liqueurs like almond or walnut, and cream liqueurs that combine dairy with spirits. The term also covers coffee, chocolate, and caramel-flavored products.

Historically, liqueurs emerged in medieval and early modern Europe as medicinal or culinary preparations, often produced by monasteries or apothecaries. Over time, they evolved into commercially produced beverages that are enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in mixed drinks.

In Sweden, likören is widely available and distributed through Systembolaget, the state-owned retailer for alcohol. Regulations govern labeling, ingredients, and age restrictions.

Usage: Liqueurs are used to flavor cocktails, to sweeten coffee or desserts, or enjoyed as after-dinner drinks.
