The word derives from the Finnish verb lieventyä, meaning to ease or alleviate, with the plural past participle suffix -neet used to refer to multiple such instances or periods. In Finnish scholarship, lieventyneet functions as a neutral label for a subset of crisis-trajectory patterns rather than a fixed mechanism.

Lieventyneet can be of various types, including political (ceasefires, power-sharing arrangements), economic (stabilization packages, reforms improving macroconditions), and humanitarian (improved aid access, return of basic services). Analysts describe lieventyneet as phases characterized by lower intensity of conflict, better mobility for civilians, and improving economic indicators.
