Lieryhmien

Lieryhmien is a genus of bioluminescent fungi described within the fictional flora of the Nereid Archipelago. In this world, it comprises several species that share luminous fruiting bodies and a saprotrophic lifestyle. The name appears in local dialects as a reference to light arising from decaying wood.

Fruiting bodies range from 5 to 25 millimeters across, with a smooth cap that is pale tan to olive and a slender stalk typically 6 to 40 millimeters long. The surface glows blue-green in darkness, a light emission produced by luciferin–luciferase–like chemistry common to many glow fungi. Light intensity is greatest when fruiting is fresh and diminishes with age or dryness.

Lieryhmien species grow on decaying hardwood in damp forest floors, often forming small colonies on fallen logs. They are found at mid-elevations, roughly 50 to 900 meters, in the evergreen and mixed hardwood forests of the central archipelago. They are considered saprotrophic, contributing to wood decomposition and nutrient cycling.

Reproduction occurs via basidiospores released from the gills or pores, dispersed by humidity and nocturnal insects. The glow is thought to attract these insects to aid in spore distribution, particularly in humid, moonless nights.

Taxonomic placement varies in in-world literature. In most formal treatments, Lieryhmien is placed within the fictional family Lierymiaceae, within the order Agaricales, though some scholars describe it as a distinctive lineage with uncertain affinities.

Culturally, Lieryhmien luminescence features in folklore and art. Glowing patches on logs are often interpreted as forest sentinels or signs of ancestral presence, and the fungi are used, when gathered with care, to produce luminescent pigments for crafts. In-world conservation emphasizes habitat protection to sustain fruiting cycles.
