Levyformatointi, often referred to as disk formatting, is the process of preparing a data storage device such as a hard disk drive, solid-state drive, or USB flash drive for initial use. This process involves setting up the file system, which organizes how data is stored and retrieved on the device. Without a file system, an operating system cannot store or access files on the storage medium.

There are typically two main types of formatting: low-level formatting and high-level formatting. Low-level formatting, often performed at the factory, divides the disk into sectors and tracks, establishing the physical structure. High-level formatting, which is what users commonly perform, creates the file system on the disk, such as FAT32, NTFS, or exFAT for Windows, HFS+ or APFS for macOS, and ext4 for Linux. This includes creating a root directory and setting up the necessary structures for file management.

Formatting a drive erases all existing data, making it unrecoverable without specialized software and techniques. Therefore, it is crucial to back up any important data before proceeding with the formatting process. Formatting is often necessary when a new drive is installed, when a drive needs to be prepared for a new operating system, or when troubleshooting issues related to file system corruption. The choice of file system during high-level formatting depends on the intended use of the drive and the operating system it will be used with.
