Erases is the third-person singular present form of the verb erase. To erase is to remove written, drawn, or recorded material from a surface or to remove information from a record. The term is used across physical, digital, and conceptual contexts.

Physical erasure occurs on paper or other media. A pencil eraser or similar tool neutralizes graphite, charcoal, or ink marks to reveal a clean surface for new writing or drawing. Erasers vary in material, hardness, and quality, and some can smear or damage delicate substrates. In art and education, erasing is a routine activity for correcting mistakes or refining work.

Digital erasure refers to removing data from electronic storage. Deleting a file often renders it inaccessible, but erasure seeks to make recovery impractical or impossible. Methods include overwriting storage with random data, using specialized sanitization tools, degaussing magnetic media, or performing cryptographic erasure that renders the original data unreadable without a key. The effectiveness of erasure depends on the device, storage technology, and method used. Solid-state drives pose particular challenges for complete data removal because of wear leveling and hidden blocks.

Erasure also appears in editing and archival contexts, such as removing frames in film or audio, or the broader phenomenon of erasing records or histories in cultural or historical discourse. In everyday use, erasure encompasses both the simple act of cleaning or correcting and the more complex procedures required to permanently remove information from digital systems.
