This is typically expressed in air changes per hour (ACH), indicating how many times the entire volume of air within a space is replaced by fresh air in one hour.

Adequate air exchange is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality. It helps to dilute and remove pollutants generated indoors, such as carbon dioxide from respiration, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building materials and furnishings, and moisture. Proper ventilation also plays a role in controlling humidity levels, preventing the buildup of mold and mildew.

Building codes and standards often specify minimum air exchange rates for different types of spaces, such as residential homes, offices, and industrial facilities, to ensure occupant health and comfort. The required rates can vary depending on factors like occupancy, building use, and the presence of specific pollutants.

Conversely, excessively high air exchange rates can lead to increased energy consumption, as conditioned indoor air is lost and replaced by unconditioned outdoor air. This can impact heating and cooling costs. Therefore, balancing the need for fresh air with energy efficiency is a key consideration in building design and operation. Technologies like heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are used to pre-condition incoming fresh air using the energy from outgoing exhaust air, thereby reducing the energy penalty associated with ventilation.
