Leukozytenmenge refers to the quantity of leukocytes, commonly known as white blood cells, present in a given volume of blood. These cells are a crucial component of the immune system, responsible for defending the body against infection and disease. Measuring the leukozytenmenge is a standard procedure in medical diagnostics, often performed as part of a complete blood count (CBC).

An elevated leukozytenmenge, also called leukocytosis, can indicate various conditions. Commonly, it suggests an active infection, as the body ramps up white blood cell production to fight off pathogens. Inflammation, stress, certain medications like corticosteroids, and some types of leukemia can also lead to an increase in white blood cell counts.

Conversely, a decreased leukozytenmenge, known as leukopenia, can signal other health issues. This reduction can be caused by viral infections, autoimmune disorders where the body attacks its own white blood cells, bone marrow disorders that impair production, or as a side effect of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Severe leukopenia can significantly compromise the body's ability to fight off infections, making individuals more susceptible to illness.
