Lernräder, also known as learning bicycles or balance bikes, are small, pedal-less bicycles designed primarily for children aged 1 to 5 years. Unlike traditional bicycles, they lack pedals and chains, focusing instead on balance and coordination. This design encourages children to develop their sense of balance and steering skills naturally, often before they are ready to use a bicycle with pedals.

The concept of Lernräder originated in Europe, particularly in Germany and Austria, where they gained popularity in the early 2000s. The name "Lernrad" translates to "learning bike," emphasizing their role in teaching foundational cycling skills. These bikes typically feature lightweight frames, often made from materials like aluminum or steel, and are available in various sizes to accommodate different ages and heights.
