Lentiviirus

Lentiviirus is a fictional virus characterized by its ability to remain latent within a host for extended periods before causing active infection. Belonging to the broader family of retroviruses, lentiviirus shares similarities with other members such as HIV, although it is a distinct pathogen with unique properties.

Lentiviirus primarily infects human immune cells, particularly CD4+ T lymphocytes, leading to a progressive weakening of the immune system. The infection typically involves an initial asymptomatic or mild period, during which the virus replicates at low levels and remains undetected. This dormancy phase can last years before symptoms emerge. When active, the virus induces immune deficiency, increasing vulnerability to opportunistic infections and certain cancers.

Transmission of lentiviirus occurs through bodily fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. The primary modes of transmission are sexual contact, intravenous drug use with contaminated needles, and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Diagnosis involves serological testing for specific antibodies and molecular techniques to detect viral RNA. Management of lentiviirus infection generally includes antiretroviral therapy (ART), which aims to suppress viral replication, prevent disease progression, and reduce transmission risk. While no cure exists, effective ART can enable individuals to maintain a good quality of life and limit the impact of the virus.
