Lenstar

Lenstar is a brand name for a line of optical biometers used in ophthalmology to measure the eye’s dimensions for intraocular lens (IOL) calculations and other preoperative assessments. The devices are developed and marketed by Haag-Streit and are employed in eye clinics and hospitals around the world to aid in planning cataract and refractive surgeries.

The Lenstar employs non-contact optical biometry, using techniques such as partial coherence interferometry to obtain measurements efficiently and safely. Its measurements typically include axial length, keratometry (corneal curvature), anterior chamber depth, and lens thickness. Depending on the model and software, Lenstar devices may also provide additional data relevant to refractive planning, such as corneal thickness or other biometry-related parameters. Measurements are performed with the patient looking into the device, and automated alignment and repeat measurements help ensure reliability.

In clinical practice, Lenstar measurements feed IOL power calculations using a variety of formulas, including commonly used options such as Haigis, Holladay, and Barrett Universal II, depending on the model and software version. The equipment is used by ophthalmologists and optometrists for preoperative planning, cataract surgery, and, in some cases, refractive surgery workflows.

Variants in the Lenstar family include different generations and models, such as Lenstar LS 900, with updates to hardware and software to improve speed, measurement reliability, and integration with electronic medical records.
