Lemosho

Lemosho is a trekking route used to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Located on the mountain’s western flank, it begins at Londorossi Gate and traverses the Lemosho Glades near the Shira Plateau. The route is named after this glade region and is recognized for its scenic variety, lengthy approach, and comparatively low crowds. The longer itinerary and gradual acclimatization contribute to one of the higher summit success rates among Kilimanjaro routes.

Typical itineraries last seven to eight days. Trekkers gain altitude gradually through a sequence of camps, often starting at Mti Mkubwa or Shira Camp, then moving across the Shira Plateau and continuing toward Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu camps before the final summit push to Uhuru Peak. The ascent commonly merges with the Machame route near Barranco or Karanga, after which travellers follow the standard summit route and descend by Mweka. The route traverses distinct ecosystems, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the summit zone, offering a diverse trekking experience.

Seasonality and practical considerations: Lemosho is frequently recommended for those seeking a longer, less crowded ascent with good acclimatization. It is typically best undertaken during the dry seasons of June–October and January–February. Altitude sickness risk remains high; proper acclimatization, pacing, and hydration are essential. Guides, porters, and park permits are standard components of a Kilimanjaro expedition, with services arranged through licensed operators and the Kilimanjaro National Park authority.
