Leakage inductance is a result of the imperfect coupling between the primary and secondary windings in a transformer or the imperfect magnetic circuit in an inductor. It arises due to factors such as the finite permeability of the core material, the presence of air gaps, and the non-ideal winding configuration. The leakage flux creates additional inductance, which can be represented as a series inductance in the equivalent circuit of the transformer or inductor.

The value of leakage inductance is typically much smaller than the main inductance but can still have significant effects on the overall performance of the electrical system. In transformers, leakage inductance can lead to voltage drops and power losses, affecting the efficiency and regulation of the transformer. In inductors, it can cause resonance effects and impact the performance of circuits operating at high frequencies.
