Leikkikentillä is a Finnish term meaning "at the playground" or referring to playgrounds themselves. In Finland, playgrounds are an important part of public space planning and are often regarded as essential infrastructure for child and adolescent development. They are typically located in parks, schoolyards, and community areas, and are designed to be accessible to children of all ages and abilities.

Finnish playground design follows strict safety and quality guidelines set by the Association of Finnish Architects and the Ministry of Education and Culture. The guidelines emphasize minimal use of metal and glass in playground equipment, the avoidance of small parts that could be swallowed, and regular maintenance to ensure surfaces remain in good condition. In addition, playground surfaces are usually equipped with natural materials such as timber or rubberised mats to provide impact absorption and reduce injury risk.

Playgrounds in Finland are intentionally multifunctional. Apart from play equipment, many sites include open lawns, climbing structures, and water features that encourage imaginative play, cooperation, and physical activity. Some playgrounds incorporate quiet zones for children who need rest, as well as areas suitable for parents and older teenagers to engage in social activities.

Research conducted in Finland and other Nordic countries indicates that well‑designed playgrounds promote motor skill development, social interaction and risk assessment in children. They also serve an important civic role by fostering community cohesion and providing inclusive recreational opportunities in both urban and rural settings.
