Leguane

Leguane is a genus of herbivorous lizards belonging to the family Iguanidae. They are native to tropical areas of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. The most well-known species is the green iguana, Iguana iguana, which is often kept as a pet.

Leguane are characterized by their distinctive appearance, including a crest of spines running down their back, a dewlap (a flap of skin hanging from the throat), and a powerful tail used for defense and swimming. They are primarily arboreal, meaning they live in trees, and are adept climbers. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, flowers, and fruits.

In their natural habitat, leguane play a role in seed dispersal. Due to their popularity as pets, they have been introduced to various parts of the world, sometimes becoming invasive species and posing a threat to native ecosystems. Conservation efforts are in place for some species due to habitat loss and illegal pet trade. They are ectothermic, relying on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature, and often bask in the sun to warm up.
