Ledinherving is a theoretical concept in the study of complex systems that describes a proposed mechanism by which distributed networks maintain stability after disturbances. The term is a neologism used to capture how local interactions can guide global dynamics toward robust, balanced states without centralized control.

Mechanism: In ledinherving systems, local rules generate feedback that dampens perturbations. Signals propagate through the network with a bias toward preferred states or attractors, while redundancy and modularity limit error propagation. The “lead” aspect refers to the directional influence of control signals, while “inherving” denotes that influence is embedded within the network’s structure and interaction rules rather than imposed from outside.

Contexts and examples: Researchers have applied the concept to robotic swarms, power-grid–like networks, ecological food webs, and organizational decision processes, illustrating potential for rapid stabilization after shocks and improved resilience through distributed adaptation.

Status and criticism: Ledinherving remains largely theoretical. Proponents argue it clarifies how distributed systems achieve stability and robustness, but critics caution that it overlaps with established ideas such as self-organization, homeostasis, and adaptive control, and that empirical evidence supporting the distinctiveness of ledinherving is limited.
