Learningaugmented, or learning-augmented algorithms, is a class of techniques that integrates machine-learned predictions into traditional algorithms and data structures to improve practical performance while retaining worst-case guarantees. The core idea is to use a predictor trained on historical data to estimate future inputs, costs, or states, and to design an algorithm that exploits these estimates when they are accurate but remains correct and efficient when they are not.

Frameworks typically separate a prediction model from an algorithmic core. The predictor may output numerical estimates, such as the next access probability in a cache or the position of a key in a lookup structure. The algorithm then uses the prediction to optimize operations, while provisions enforce safe fallback paths that guarantee acceptable performance regardless of prediction quality. Researchers measure performance using notions such as consistency (best-case when predictions are perfect) and robustness (worst-case guarantees under poor predictions).

Early work focused on online problems and data structures, including caches, searching and sorting, and graph problems. A related strand includes learned index structures, where a model predicts data positions to reduce search effort. These ideas have practical applications in databases, file systems, and high-performance computing, often yielding speedups on real-world workloads.

Limitations include reliance on representative training data, risk of degraded performance with biased models, and complexity in guaranteeing rigorous guarantees under model drift. Ongoing work addresses model selection, error-tolerant designs, and adaptive methods that guard against prediction failures.
