Lavasteiden

Lavasteiden, or lava stones, are igneous rocks formed when magma erupts onto the Earth's surface and cools rapidly, producing a variety of textures and mineral compositions. They can range from glassy volcanic glass to vesicular rocks full of gas bubbles, and from dense, crystal-poor varieties to more crystallized forms.

The texture and type of lava stone depend on the magma’s chemical composition and the cooling rate. Rapid cooling with little crystal growth can produce obsidian, a smooth, glassy rock. Rapid cooling with abundant gas yields pumice, a light, highly vesicular rock that floats on water. More silica-poor magmas produce dense rocks such as basalt and scoria, which are dark and often have a porous, vesicular structure.

Common lava stones include obsidian, pumice, scoria, and basalt. They occur in a wide range of colors, typically black, gray, or reddish-brown for basaltic varieties, with obsidian often appearing deep black or dark green. The porous varieties can absorb liquids and minerals, while dense varieties are relatively impermeable.

Uses of lava stones are diverse. They are popular in landscaping and architecture for their durability and aesthetic. Jewelry and beads are often fashioned from smaller pieces or from glassy obsidian. In culinary and spa contexts, heated lava stones, especially basalt, are used for cooking, massage, and hot-stone therapies due to their heat retention properties.
