Lattice parameter refers to the physical dimensions of a unit cell of a crystal structure. A unit cell is the smallest repeating unit of a crystal lattice. In crystallography, the unit cell is typically defined by three edge lengths, often denoted as a, b, and c, and three interaxial angles, commonly alpha, beta, and gamma. The lattice parameters are these six values that completely describe the size and shape of the unit cell.

For cubic crystal systems, where all edges are equal in length and all angles are 90 degrees, there is only one lattice parameter, 'a'. For tetragonal and orthorhombic systems, two and three distinct lattice parameters exist respectively, along with constraints on the angles. Monoclinic and triclinic systems have the most general unit cells, requiring all six parameters (a, b, c, alpha, beta, gamma) to fully define them.

Lattice parameters are crucial for understanding and characterizing crystalline materials. They are determined experimentally using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction, and electron diffraction. The precise values of lattice parameters are sensitive to factors like temperature, pressure, and chemical composition, making them valuable indicators of material properties and phase transformations. Changes in lattice parameters can reveal information about strain, defects, and alloying effects within a crystal.
