Latesuccessional
Latesuccessional refers to species that are characteristic of the later stages of ecological succession. Ecological succession is the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time. Early successional species, often called pioneers, are typically fast-growing, shade-intolerant, and can colonize disturbed or bare ground quickly. As these early species establish themselves, they modify the environment, making it more suitable for later successional species.
Latesuccessional species are generally slower-growing, more shade-tolerant, and have longer lifespans than their early successional counterparts.
