Lateriittimalmistoja

Lateriittimalmistoja are geological formations rich in iron, aluminum, and other valuable metals, commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. These deposits are a result of intense weathering of silicate rocks over long geological periods, a process known as laterization. Tropical rainfall leaches away soluble elements like silica and alkali metals, leaving behind a residual concentration of less soluble metallic oxides and hydroxides, primarily iron and aluminum.

The characteristic red or reddish-brown color of lateritic soils is due to the high concentration of iron oxides, such as goethite and hematite. Aluminum is often present as gibbsite. While lateritic soils can be found across vast areas, economically significant laterite deposits, often referred to as lateritic ores, are concentrated in specific locations. These deposits serve as crucial sources for the extraction of aluminum (from bauxite, a type of laterite), nickel, iron, cobalt, and manganese.

The formation and richness of lateriittimalmistoja are influenced by factors including a hot and humid climate, good drainage, and the presence of parent rocks with sufficient metallic content. Mining these deposits can be challenging due to their often unconsolidated nature and the presence of impurities. Nevertheless, lateritic ores are a vital resource for global metal production.
