Lateraleyed refers to organisms, primarily animals, that have their eyes positioned on the sides of their heads. This eye placement provides a wide field of view, enabling the animal to detect movement and potential threats from nearly all directions without having to turn their heads. Lateral eye placement is common among prey species such as fish, frogs, and some birds, offering a survival advantage in their environments by enhancing their ability to watch for predators.

The structure of lateral-eyed animals allows for a broad panoramic perspective, often exceeding 150 degrees of visual field. This sensory adaptation enables them to monitor their surroundings continually and swiftly respond to upcoming dangers. However, this advantage often comes at the expense of depth perception, which is generally less precise in lateral-eyed creatures compared to animals with frontal eye placement, like primates.

In aquatic environments, lateral eye placement is particularly advantageous for fish, as it facilitates the detection of predators and prey in a complex and fast-changing habitat. Similarly, in terrestrial animals such as rabbits or certain reptiles, lateral eyes support vigilant scanning across vast areas, increasing their chances of survival.
