Lastverteilung, or load distribution, refers to the allocation of loads or demand across the components of a system to maintain safety, efficiency, and reliability. The term is used across engineering disciplines and technology to describe how stresses, electricity demand, or computing requests are spread and managed.

In electrical power systems, Lastverteilung concerns how load is distributed among generators, transformers, and network elements. It involves load-flow calculations, unit commitment and dispatch, and network topology. Reliability criteria such as N-1 contingencies, balancing markets, and real-time redispatch influence how demand is shared among sources. Proper load distribution minimizes losses, voltage deviations, and the risk of overloads.

In structural and mechanical engineering, Lastverteilung refers to how external loads are taken up and redistributed by structural members. Factors such as geometry, stiffness, boundary conditions, and dynamic effects shape load paths. Engineers use static and dynamic analysis, influence lines, and finite element methods to ensure stress levels stay within material limits and that redundancy exists.

In information technology, Lastverteilung describes load balancing among servers, services, or data paths. Load balancers employ algorithms such as round-robin, least connections, and resource-aware scheduling to distribute requests. Objectives include maximizing throughput, minimizing response time, and providing fault tolerance through redundancy. Both hardware and software load balancers, as well as cloud-native balancing, are common.

Accurate Lastverteilung relies on forecasting, monitoring, and measurement, with consideration of uncertainty, peak demand, and safety margins.
