Lastversatz

Lastversatz is a term used in geoscience, particularly in German-language literature on faulting and paleoseismology, to denote the most recent observable offset across a fault produced by rupture during an earthquake cycle. The term literally means "last offset." In English-language geology, the concept is often described as last fault offset, last rupture offset, or simply last slip.

Definition and scope: It refers to the amount and geometry of displacement that is recorded by observable markers at the land surface corresponding to the latest rupture event. The lastversatz is not a fixed, universally defined quantity; it reflects the most recent surface-recorded offset, which may be horizontal, vertical, or oblique depending on fault geometry and marker type.

Determination and methods: In practice, researchers map offsets of geomorphic features such as river channels, stream terraces, fault scarps, or shoreline features. Dating of the marker and the surrounding sediments is done with radiocarbon, luminescence, or other chronometers; high-resolution topography (LiDAR) helps measure offsets precisely. The interpretation often requires integrating geomorphic data with stratigraphic context and fault geometry.
