Lastenkirjallisuus, or children's literature, refers to books and related media written for children and young readers. It spans picture books, early readers, novels, graphic novels, and comics, addressing childhood experiences, curiosity, and moral and social questions. The aim is to entertain while supporting literacy, language development, and imagination, often through accessible language, vivid illustration, and age-appropriate themes.

In Finland, as elsewhere, the genre emerged from folk storytelling and fairy tales and began to become more formalized in the 19th and 20th centuries with schools, libraries, and publishing houses shaping the market. Today, Finnish children's literature is multilingual in practice, with works originally written in Finnish and Swedish and widely translated. Libraries and national programs promote reading and author visits.

Notable Finnish authors include Tove Jansson, whose Moomins have become internationally recognized for their whimsy and philosophical undertones; Mauri Kunnas, known for richly illustrated animal stories; and Sinikka Nopola and Tiina Nopola, authors of popular contemporary titles such as the Risto Räppääjä series. International influences and collaborations continually shape the field, with translations making global works available to Finnish readers.

Contemporary developments include picture-book albums, chapter books, and digital formats, as well as graphic novels and interactive storytelling. Criticism and debate focus on representation, diversity, and access, as well as balancing entertainment with educational goals in a digital era.
